GENOVA 2004: EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE

On May 28, 1998 the European Union nominated Genoa as the European Capital of Culture for 2004, together with the French city of Lille. It is the third time that an Italian city has come to be designated as the Cultural Capital of Europe, after Florence in 1986 and Bologna in 2000.

The Comune and other Intstitutions have renovated the image of the city for the occasion. Genova is asserting herself as a contemporary city, attentive to cultural tendencies as well as technological research.
Genoa, The City Center

The city has changed: The Porto Antico, for example, formerly the industrial zone, has become a tourist attraction and a place where the citizens of Genova can meet. In Genova, the port, the industry, the tourism and the culture cohabit and make this city and interesting mix at national and international levels.
The program of events for 2004 covers music, theatre, dance, literature, cinema, science and work, history and traditions of the region, sports, museums, and libraries. A sumptuously rich calendar to consult may be found at the official website: www.genova-2004.it, where one can also buy tickets for the events. From April 22 to May 5, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di San Francisco will host the exhibit "Gli Alberti a Genova, Banchieri e Mercanti fiorentini in una capitale del commercio europeo".

The show which has just concluded in Genoa will transfer to San Francisco. It is a tribute to Leon Battisti Alberti (1402-1472), humanist, theorist, musician and artist, one of the most important figures in the Italian Renaissance.

Il Comune e altre Istituzioni hanno rinnovato l’immagine della città per questa occasione unica. Genova si sta affermando come città contemporanea, attenta alla tendenze culturali, alla ricerca e alla tecnologia. La città è cambiata: il Porto Antico, per esempio, da zona industriale è divenuto un’attrazione turistica e un luogo d’incontro per i cittadini genovesi. A Genova, il porto, l’industria, il turismo e la cultura convivono e fanno di questa città una meta interessante a livello nazionale e internazionale.

Il programma degli eventi per il 2004 copre musica, teatro, danza, letteratura, cinema, scienza e lavoro, storia e tradizioni del territorio, sport, musei, biblioteche. Il Porto Antico
Dal 22 aprile al 5 maggio, l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di San Francisco ospiterà l’esposizione “Gli Alberti a Genova. Banchieri e Mercanti fiorentini in una capitale del commercio europeo”. La mostra, che si conclude a Genova e si trasferisce a San Francisco, è un tributo a Leon Battisti Alberti (1404-1472), umanista, teorico, musicista e artista, una delle figure più importanti del Rinascimento italiano.

SPRING IN ROME

The Province of Rome has decided to celebrate spring from March 21 to June 20, opening historic palazzi and musuems. Rome and her province will bring in cultural manifestations, exhibits, theatrical performances, music and dance.
The equinox of March 21, for the ancients, was the day on which Marte married Venere. From that love will be born Armonia, protector of peace. To celebrate spring, is therefore, the intent of the Province of Rome, to celebrate peace, in keeping with the history of the tradition.

In Rome, the first big exposition will be on the subject of spring; over 70 works illustrating the theme from naturalistic, allegoric and mythological perspectives. The exhibit will remain open for one full month, from April 2 to May 2, free to the public.
From May 1, there will be an exposition on the theme of work with paintings of various artists of the first and second half of the XXth century. There will also be a lot of music: the Corte di Palazzo Valentini will host classical music. Ennio Morricone, on April 11, in the Basilica di Santa Maria dell’Ara Coeli, will present an extraordinary program of sacred music.
Rome, Colesseum
Claudio Abbado, on April 14, will be in the Auditorium of Rome with the Mahler Jugend Orchestre. As for dancing, Carla Fracci with the Corpo di ballo del teatro dell’ Opera will perform on April 11 in the theatre of Formello, the Nuovo teatro di San Vito Romano and the theatre Traiano di Civitavecchia.
In Grottaferrata, Easter will be celebrated in the Abbazia di San Nilo, in accordance with Greek Orthodox rites. At the Castello di Cerveteri there will be a performance of Tosca, in an “modern key” version. And flowers, many flowers, on June 20 in Genzano for the traditional Infiorata, a party that goes back to 1778. When the heat of the summer arrives a huge concert will close the Festa di Primavera.

PRIMAVERA A ROMA

La Provincia di Roma ha deciso di festeggiare la primavera dal 21 marzo al 20 giugno, aprendo palazzi storici e musei. Roma e la sua provincia accoglieranno manifestazioni culturali, mostre, spettacoli teatrali, musica, balli. L'equinozio del 21 marzo per gli antichi era il giorno in cui Marte si univa a Venere. Da quell'amore nascerà Armonia, protettrice della pace. Festeggiare la primavera è dunque, nell'intento della Provincia di Roma, festeggiare la pace, in linea con la storia e con la tradizione.
Roma, Piazza di Spagna, S. Trinità dei Monti
A Roma la prima grande esposizione sarà sulla primavera: oltre settanta opere che illustrano il tema sotto l'aspetto naturalistico, allegorico e mitologico. La mostra rimarrà aperta un mese intero, dal 2 aprile al 2 maggio, ingresso gratuito. Il 1 maggio si aprirà una mostra sul tema del lavoro con dipinti di vari artisti della prima e della seconda metà del Novecento.
Ci sarà anche molta musica: la Corte di Palazzo Valentini ospiterà concerti di musica classica. Ennio Morricone, l'11 aprile, nella Basilica di Santa Maria dell'Ara Coeli presenterà uno straordinario programma di musiche sacre. Claudio Abbado il 14 aprile sarà all'Auditorium di Roma con la Mahler Jugend Orchestre. Per la danza, Carla Fracci con il Corpo di ballo del teatro dell'Opera si esibirà in aprile al teatro stabile di Formello, al Nuovo teatro di San Vito Romano e al teatro Traiano di Civitavecchia.
A Grottaferrata la Pasqua sarà celebrata nell'Abbazia di San Nilo, secondo il rito greco ortodosso. Al Castello di Cerveteri verrà rappresentata la Tosca in una edizione in chiave moderna. E fiori, tanti fiori il 20 giugno a Genzano per la tradizionale Infiorata, una festa che risale al 1778. E quando arriverà il caldo sole dell'estate un grande concerto chiuderà la Festa di Primavera.
